How to Support Yourself And Your Family
- Maintain predictable household routines and appropriate rules for your family and child.
- Spend extra time with your child in a way he or she feels supported.
- Provide comfort for your child through increased attention, extra hugs, nightlights, and favorite security objects such as stuffed animals or blankets.
- Be aware of possible situations that may trigger memories of the trauma. Careful screening of TV programs, movies, and adult conversations will keep a child from being overwhelmed by feelings and memories of the trauma.
- Take care of yourself. When children are affected by a stressful event, the adults in their lives are impacted too. Allow opportunities to relax, exercise, sleep and eat well.
- Seek the support of your trusted friends, family, and a professional for yourself, your child and other family members impacted by the event.
